Local and Effective Temperatures of Quantum Driven Systems
We introduce thermometers to define the local temperature of an electronic
system driven out-of-equilibrium by local AC fields. We also define the
effective temperature in terms of a local fluctuation-dissipation-relation. We
show that within the weak driving regime these two temperatures coincide. We
also discuss the behavior of the local temperature along the sample. We show
that it exhibits spatial fluctuations following an oscillatory pattern. For
weak driving, regions of the sample become heated, while others become cooled
as a consequence of the driving
Magnetic structures and Z_2 vortices in a non-Abelian gauge model
The magnetic order of the triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic
interactions is described by an SO(3) field and allows for the presence of Z2
magnetic vortices as defects. In this work we show how these Z2 vortices can be
fitted into a local SU(2) gauge theory. We propose simple Ansatzes for vortex
configurations and calculate their energies using well-known results of the
Abelian gauge model. We comment on how Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions could
be derived from a non-Abelian gauge theory and speculate on their effect on non
trivial configurations
Numerical integration of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in generic time-discretisation schemes
We introduce a numerical method to integrate the stochastic
Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in spherical coordinates for generic
discretization schemes. This method conserves the magnetization modulus and
ensures the approach to equilibrium under the expected conditions. We test the
algorithm on a benchmark problem: the dynamics of a uniformly magnetized
ellipsoid. We investigate the influence of various parameters, and in
particular, we analyze the efficiency of the numerical integration, in terms of
the number of steps needed to reach a chosen long time with a given accuracy.Comment: 9 pages and 7 figure
Self-dual Chern-Simons solitons in noncommutative space
We construct exact soliton solutions to the Chern-Simons-Higgs system in
noncommutative space, for non-relativistic and relativistic models. In both
cases we find regular vortex-like solutions to the BPS equations which approach
the ordinary selfdual non-topological and topological solitons when the
noncommutative parameter goes to zero.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
How to Find Suitable Ontologies Using an Ontology-based WWW Broker
Knowledge reuse by means of outologies now faces three important problems: (1) there are no standardized identifying features that characterize ontologies from the user point of view; (2) there are no web sites using the same logical organization, presenting relevant information about ontologies; and (3) the search for appropriate ontologies is hard, time-consuming and usually fruitless. To solve the above problems, we present: (1) a living set of features that allow us to characterize ontologies from the user point of view and have the same logical organization; (2) a living domain ontology about ontologies (called ReferenceOntology) that gathers, describes and has links to existing ontologies; and (3) (ONTO)2Agent, the ontology-based www broker about ontologies that uses the Reference Ontology as a source of its knowledge and retrieves descriptions of ontologies that satisfy a given set of constraints. (ONTO)~Agent is available at http://delicias.dia.fi.upm.es/REFERENCE ONTOLOGY

Trends in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of future light duty electric vehicles
The majority of previous studies examining life cycle greenhouse gas (LCGHG) emissions of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have focused on efficiency-oriented vehicle designs with limited battery capacities. However, two dominant trends in the US BEV market make these studies increasingly obsolete: sales show significant increases in battery capacity and attendant range and are increasingly dominated by large luxury or high-performance vehicles. In addition, an era of new use and ownership models may mean significant changes to vehicle utilization, and the carbon intensity of electricity is expected to decrease. Thus, the question is whether these trends significantly alter our expectations of future BEV LCGHG emissions. To answer this question, three archetypal vehicle designs for the year 2025 along with scenarios for increased range and different use models are simulated in an LCGHG model: an efficiency-oriented compact vehicle; a high performance luxury sedan; and a luxury sport utility vehicle. While production emissions are less than 10% of LCGHG emissions for today's gasoline vehicles, they account for about 40% for a BEV, and as much as two-thirds of a future BEV operated on a primarily renewable grid. Larger battery systems and low utilization do not outweigh expected reductions in emissions from electricity used for vehicle charging. These trends could be exacerbated by increasing BEV market shares for larger vehicles. However, larger battery systems could reduce per-mile emissions of BEVs in high mileage applications, like on-demand ride sharing or shared vehicle fleets, meaning that trends in use patterns may countervail those in BEV design
Depinning and dynamics of AC driven vortex lattices in random media
We study the different dynamical regimes of a vortex lattice driven by AC
forces in the presence of random pinning via numerical simulations. The
behaviour of the different observables is charaterized as a function of the
applied force amplitude for different frequencies. We discuss the
inconveniences of using the mean velocity to identify the depinnig transition
and we show that instead, the mean quadratic displacement of the lattice is the
relevant magnitude to characterize different AC regimes. We discuss how the
results depend on the initial configuration and we identify new hysteretic
effects which are absent in the DC driven systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
